Heart-brain interactions in perseverative cognition: From experimental studies to clinical interventions
In my seminar, I will review a series of studies conducted in different settings (laboratory, fMRI, daily life), populations (healthy, major depression, generalized anxiety), location (United States, Europe), and age groups (children, adults) that consistently replicated the existence of a nexus between cognitive and autonomic inflexibility when examining the mind wandering – perseverative cognition continuum. More recent studies on the possibility to influence cognitive control by experimentally manipulating cortical excitability via non-invasive brain stimulation techniques will be presented, with important implications for the prevention and timely treatment of stress-related disorders
