No study to date has examined the joint association of depressive mood and irritability during childhood with later suicidality. In contrast\, I present a framework that explains the formation of these and other typical attitude biases as rather innocent byproducts of cognitive principles of information processing. Accordingly\, attitude formation is guided by differentiation\, meaning that it primarily relies on distinct attributes that differentiate a given attitude object from already known ones. Distinct attributes however\, are usually negative. Because negative attributes are rare and highly diverse\, they are overrepresented among distinct attributes. Consequently\, attitudes about “novel” persons and groups such as strangers\, refugees\, minorities\, or out-groups can be expected to be negatively biased. In addition\, assuming that stereotypes describe attributes that differentiate a given group from other groups\, most stereotypes can be expected to be negative. Finally\, the present framework also predicts typical self-superiority effects and a general negative attitude towards change (“status-quo-bias”). In sum\, the present work suggests that differentiation – an innocent principle of information processing – often results in the formation of negatively biased attitudes\, because what differentiates a person or group from the population background is usually negative. Most work reads like an exercise in model fitting\, and falls short of theory building and testing in three ways. First\, statistical and theoretical models are conflated\, leading to invalid inferences such as the existence of psychological constructs based on factor models\, or recommendations for clinical interventions based on network models. I my talk\, demonstrate this inferential gap in a simulation: excellent model fit does little to corroborate a theory\, regardless of quality or quantity of data. Second\, researchers fail to explicate theories about psychological constructs\, but use implicit causal beliefs to guide inferences. These latent theories have led to problematic best practices. Third\, explicated theories are often weak theories: imprecise descriptions vulnerable to hidden assumptions and unknowns. Such theories do not offer precise predictions\, and it is often unclear whether statistical effects actually corroborate weak theories or not. I demonstrate that these three challenges are common and harmful\, and impede theory formation\, failure\, and reform. Matching theoretical and statistical models is necessary to bring data to bear on theories\, and a renewed focus on theoretical psychology and formalizing theories offers a way forward. Thus\, the question of how and why people believe information to be true is a prominent research topic. I will approach this question from a Brunswikian perspective: Truth is a distal concept that cannot be assessed directly. Instead\, people must use cues that may be indicative of information’s factual truth status. I will distinguish between two broad classes of cues\, namely informational cues (e.g.\, knowledge sources\, advice) and experiential cues (e.g.\, familiarity\, fluency). The former cues may be misleading; that is\, a source may be faulty or advice may be wrong. The latter cues are a priori true; if information feels familiar or is processed fluently\, the experience has an inherent truth value. With this assumption\, one may explain and predict when and why people believe false information despite knowing better. I will present several experiments that pit these two classes of cues against each other and show that they jointly inform judgments of truth. However\, if the cues contradict each other\, people still use the experiential cue\, even for highly relevant topics and with tangible costs for themselves in an incentivized paradigm. However\, people regularly form mental representations of faces when the people they are thinking about are not in front of them. Research from my lab suggests that merely sharing a novel group membership with another person can bias how one represents that person’s face. In the current talk\, I will present new evidence that one way people represent ingroup and outgroup faces is by imbuing arbitrary group distinctions with meaning. Specifically\, we find that people who are separated into minimal groups using a classic overestimator/underestimator paradigm form different representations of overestimator and underestimator faces. Ingroup and outgroup representational differences are then scaffolded onto the overestimator and underestimator differences. This work provides new insight into the minimal group paradigm and how people think about faces of group members. It is felt when the outcome of a non-chosen alternative is better than the outcomes obtained. Regret a functional emotion that helps people to correct mistakes. It is also functional because people can anticipate regret beforehand and then choose in such a way to avoid regret from happening. Researchers in economics proposed regret theory\, an alternative to rational choice theory that takes into account the anticipation of regret and its influence in choice. Researchers in psychology in studied how anticipations of regret influence decision making in a variety of domains\, amongst which the health domain. The findings suggest that interventions can be developed that are based on the idea that people are regret averse. Après une brève introduction sur le concept de motivation\, je vais me focaliser sur la question du déficit motivationnel en cas de dépression et montrer que cela dépend non seulement de la sévérité du trouble\, mais aussi du contexte. En me basant sur la théorie de l’intensité de la motivation (Brehm & Self\, 1989) et des mesures cardiovasculaires de l’effort (Wright\, 1996)\, je vais présenter des études récentes sur la mobilisation de l’effort des personnes avec dépression clinique et sous-clinique. Ces études montrent premièrement que des personnes avec dépression sous-clinique mobilisent bien de l’effort pour des tâches plutôt faciles ou de type “faites de votre mieux”\, mais se désengagent dans des tâches plutôt difficiles. Deuxièmement\, les personnes avec dépression clinique et sous-clinique se disent moins motivées par des récompenses monétaires et non-monétaires\, mobilisent moins d’effort pour les obtenir et montrent moins d’affect positif quand elles les obtiennent. Cependant\, les personnes avec dépression clinique et sous-clinique semblent sensibles aux punitions et montrent de l’affect négatif en cas de résultat négatif\, mais ne mobilisent pas le même effort pour les éviter comparées aux personnes contrôle. Finalement\, des récompenses assez élevées suscitent de la mobilisation de l’effort chez les personnes avec dépression sous-clinique. Cette présentation portera sur certains enjeux méthodologiques liés à l’étude de la présence attentive (mindfulness)\, mais surtout sur des solutions tangibles permettant d’aborder ceux-ci. La thérapie d’acceptation et d’engagement (ACT) est une approche récente qui bénéficie d’un soutien empirique considérable auprès de personnes souffrant de douleur chronique. Cependant\, l’accessibilité aux interventions psychologiques demeure restreinte pour ces personnes\, et ce\, pour diverses raisons (coûts\, éloignement de grands centres\, etc.). Les modalités d’intervention de type self-help ont le potentiel d’améliorer l’accessibilité et le rapport coûts-bénéfices des interventions psychologiques. Ce séminaire vise à présenter les résultats d’un essai aléatoire utilisant une modalité hybride (bibliothérapie et capsules Web) basée sur l’ACT auprès de 130 personnes souffrant de douleur chronique. Les résultats sont discutés et une période d’échange s’ensuit. \n« Deviens maître de ta vie » : un programme d’intervention basée sur la thérapie d’acceptation et d’engagement (ACT) pour les adolescents \nCes dernières années\, la thérapie d’acceptation et d’engagement (ACT) a attiré l’attention des chercheurs et des cliniciens dans l’intervention auprès des adolescents (ex : Ciarrochi\, Hayes et Bailey\, 2012). De par sa nature expérientielle et les processus psychologiques ciblés dans l’intervention (évitement émotionnel\, valeurs)\, la thérapie ACT s’avère particulièrement pertinente auprès des jeunes. Ce séminaire vise d’abord à présenter le contenu d’un programme d’intervention de six séances basé sur l’ACT intitulé « Deviens maître de ta vie ». Il présente ensuite les résultats d’une étude à devis pré-expérimentale menée auprès de 25 adolescents âgés entre 14 et 17 ans (71 % filles) qui consultent en clinique externe de pédopsychiatrie au CISSS de Chaudière-Appalaches (Lévis\, Canada). Conformément à nos hypothèses\, l’intervention est associée à des diminutions des symptômes anxieux et dépressifs ainsi qu’à des améliorations sur le niveau de flexibilité psychologique. We developed the Environmental Trait Affect Questionnaire (ETA-Q)\, a self-report instrument assessing individual dispositions to experience affect in environmentally relevant situations. Across a series of seven studies (N=9205)\, we investigated the factor structure\, nomological network and physiological correlates of Environmental Trait Affect\, and assessed its impact on environmental decision-making. We found support for a five-factor structure of the Environmental Trait Affect construct.
