SUMMARY:Séminaire – Martin Krippl
DESCRIPTION:Titre The how\, when and what of facial movements: Facial emotion expression and interpretation.\nDr Martin Krippl\, Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg \nRésumé Facial movements (Action Units\, AUs) are important signs of emotions. Important questions are: What is the brain basis of the sign production? How are the signs interpreted? Which of these signs are produced in emotion induction of fear and sadness and which psychophysiological reactions co-occur there? I will answer these questions partly in this talk mainly with a reference to emotion theories\, especially basic emotion theory (e.g. Ekman\, 1992). First\, I will show by fMRI-data that the production of AUs are organized in the primary motor area of the frontal cortex in a quasi-somatotopic order. Second\, I will show data on the interpretation of AU-combinations which are seen as fear expressions in EMFACS (Friesen & Ekman\, 1983). Interestingly many of these AU-combinations are interpreted as disgust or sadness. This questions usual assumptions of Ekman’s basic emotion theory (Ekman\, 1992). Third\, in another study I question Ekman’s basic emotion theory\, especially its universality assumption of facial emotion expressions. We compared German participants with an indigenous group in Uganda\, the Karamoja. The Karamoja showed strongly reduced recognition rates of the picture stimuli. Several universality criteria were tested\, but in most emotions and most criteria\, they were not fulfilled. Fourth\, I show results of an emotion induction study\, where fear and sadness were induced by film parts. Facial expressions had practically no coherence with self-reports of fear and sadness. Psychophysiological data (EDA\, IBI\, finger temperature\, neck EMG\, breathing) are also reported as well as their coherence with self-report of fear and sadness. Fifth\, I will present data on the emotion expression of elite high jumpers after clearing or missing their maximal height. We could demonstrate that triumph as first established by Hwang & Matsumoto (2012)\, is not only an emotion category\, which is recognized\, but also which happens in meaningful situations\, also in sport types with no direct fight between competitors. Theoretical implications of all the data are discussed referring to basic emotion theory\, dialect theory and other rivaling theories of emotion.

SUMMARY:Séminaire – François Ric

SUMMARY:Séminaire – Olivier Klein
\n« Conspiracism and the psychology of resentment » \nSerge Moscovici argued that the psychology of conspiracy theories was a “psychology of resentment”. In this seminar\, I will discuss this idea on the basis of studies conducted in our lab on the social psychological underpinning of conspiracy beliefs. In order to do so\, I will rely on an intergroup perspective\, inspired i.a. from social identity theory”

SUMMARY:Séminaire – George Bonanno
DESCRIPTION:Trauma\, the paradox of resilience\, and regulatory flexibility.\nLe vendredi 4 Mars\, nous allons accueillir Pr George Bonanno qui nous parlera de ces recherches autour de la flexibilité en matière de régulation émotionnelle. \nhttps://univ-grenoble-alpes-fr.zoom.us/j/92268912526?pwd=OXNlZDh0czVFbWo2bmxnYU94ZmdQQT09

SUMMARY:Séminaire – Toon Kuppens
DESCRIPTION:Education: a new and independent source of identity\, intergroup processes\, and political conflict\nPrésenté par Dr. T. (Toon) Kuppens\, University of Groningen\, The Netherlands-\nhttps://sites.google.com/site/toonkuppens/ \nRésumé de la présentation\nResearch on intergroup relations focuses on many different groups based on gender\, ethnicity\, sexual orientation\, and other characteristics. Arguably\, the most meaningful characteristic that has not been investigated as a source of intergroup processes is people’s level of formal education. Furthermore\, scholars studying inequality or social class often assume that education is merely one indicator of socioeconomic status and is to a large extent interchangeable with other indicators such as income. However\, two reasons why education is very different from income are that (1) education and not income drives current political polarization and (2) people make more internal attributions for education than for income. I therefore argue that education is an independent source of identity and intergroup processes\, and give an overview of research into education-based groups. Findings include that (1) people see their education as an important part of their identity\, (2) low education is an independent source of low subjective social status\, perceived disrespect/misrecognition\, and political alienation\, especially in countries with higher proportions of higher educated\, (3) education is perceived as a legitimate source of status\, including by the lower educated\, (4) higher educated people show education-based intergroup bias\, especially when they identify with their own education group\, (5) among people with lower levels of education\, identification is related to support for populism and support for collective action on behalf of the lower educated.

SUMMARY:Séminaire – Julianne Holt-Lunstad
DESCRIPTION:Social connection:  What decades of research and a global pandemic has taught us and what we still don’t know\nPrésenté par Julianne Holt-Lunstad. \nRésumé de la présentation\nThe importance of human connection and concerns over the effects of isolation rose to the level of a simultaneous public health crisis during the Covid-19 pandemic; however\, much of the focus was on secondary effects on mental health and emotional well-being. There is now robust evidence from decades of interdisciplinary science documenting the protective effects of social connections on health and well-being\, with the strongest evidence on longevity. Evidence strongly suggests that social connection qualifies as a protective factor for chronic disease and premature mortality. This talk will summarize this evidence\, providing the scope of the health effects\, potential mechanisms\, and risk factors\, as well as gaps in this evidence. Overall\, this evidence points to the importance of prioritizing social connection for personal and public health. The global pandemic highlights critical challenges and opportunities for addressing social connection. \nLieu :\nen salle A6 du Bâtiment Michel Dubois\nEn visioconférence

SUMMARY:Séminaire – Adam HAHN
DESCRIPTION:Towards a Better Understanding of Implicit Bias Beyond Unconsciousness and Dishonesty\nImplicit measures – the results of indirect computerized reaction-time attitude measurements such as the Implicit Associations Task (the “IAT”\, Greenwald\, McGhee\, & Schwartz\, 1998) – are often described as reflecting “attitudes that people are unable or unwilling to report” (e.g.\, www.projectimplicit.org). This suggests that people are either entirely unaware of their “unconscious” attitudes\, or unwilling to reveal them honestly. I will present a series of projects that questions the utility and veracity of both of those explanations and show that under many circumstances people are both willing and able to report on the evaluations reflected in implicit measures. Instead\, I will present a model that can explain divergences between implicit bias and explicit attitudes in terms of other psychological (attention\, failures in affective forecasting) and methodological (stimulus effects\, calibration) factors. These findings have implications for cognitive and applied social psychology. Theoretically\, they can lead to a better understanding of automaticity and consciousness in social cognition\, suggesting a distinction between three types of conscious awareness of one’s own cognitions. From an applied perspective\, a better understanding of the underlying cognitions can lead applied researchers to design more effective interventions targeted at acknowledgement of racial biases. Discussion will focus on how simplified and inaccurate explanations of implicit bias may not only be inaccurate\, but thwart the way for social-cognitive research to have an impact on important societal issues. \nAdam HAHN (Bath University)\nWebsite: https://researchportal.bath.ac.uk/en/persons/adam-hahn

SUMMARY:Séminaire – Massimiliano ORRI
Présentation des déterminants et stratégies de prévention\nSuicidal ideation and suicide attempt (suicidality) are common in adolescence and a public health concern. Childhood depression is a key risk factor for later suicidality and often co-occurs with irritability. No study to date has examined the joint association of depressive mood and irritability during childhood with later suicidality. Childrenwithhighirritabilityanddepressive/anxiousmood and\, to a lesser extent\, with moderate irritability only had a higher suicidal risk during adolescence compared with children with low symptom levels. Early manifestation of chronic irritability during childhood\, especially when combined with depressive/anxious mood\, maybe associated with an elevated risk for adolescent suicidality. The putatively causal role of irritability should be investigated.

SUMMARY:Séminaire – Cristina OTTAVIANI
DESCRIPTION:Heart-brain interactions in perseverative cognition: From experimental studies to clinical interventions\nIn my seminar\, I will review a series of studies conducted in different settings (laboratory\, fMRI\, daily life)\, populations (healthy\, major depression\, generalized anxiety)\, location (United States\, Europe)\, and age groups (children\, adults) that consistently replicated the existence of a nexus between cognitive and autonomic inflexibility when examining the mind wandering – perseverative cognition continuum. More recent studies on the possibility to influence cognitive control by experimentally manipulating cortical excitability via non-invasive brain stimulation techniques will be presented\, with important implications for the prevention and timely treatment of stress-related disorders \nCristina OTTAVIANI\, Sapienza University of Rome\, Department of Psychology\nWeb : http://dippsi.psi.uniroma1.it/users/ottaviani-cristina

SUMMARY:Séminaire – Hans ALVES
DESCRIPTION:A cognitive-ecological perspective on attitude formation and biases in social perception\nThe negative content of stereotypes as well as negative attitudes towards strangers\, minorities\, out-groups\, or towards diversity and change in general are typically explained by motivational or emotional forces. In contrast\, I present a framework that explains the formation of these and other typical attitude biases as rather innocent byproducts of cognitive principles of information processing. Accordingly\, attitude formation is guided by differentiation\, meaning that it primarily relies on distinct attributes that differentiate a given attitude object from already known ones. Distinct attributes however\, are usually negative. Because negative attributes are rare and highly diverse\, they are overrepresented among distinct attributes. Consequently\, attitudes about “novel” persons and groups such as strangers\, refugees\, minorities\, or out-groups can be expected to be negatively biased. In addition\, assuming that stereotypes describe attributes that differentiate a given group from other groups\, most stereotypes can be expected to be negative. Finally\, the present framework also predicts typical self-superiority effects and a general negative attitude towards change (“status-quo-bias”). In sum\, the present work suggests that differentiation – an innocent principle of information processing – often results in the formation of negatively biased attitudes\, because what differentiates a person or group from the population background is usually negative.

SUMMARY:Séminaire – Eiko FRIED
DESCRIPTION:Lack of theory building and testing impedes progress in psychological science\nThe applied social science literature using factor and network models continues to grow rapidly. Most work reads like an exercise in model fitting\, and falls short of theory building and testing in three ways. First\, statistical and theoretical models are conflated\, leading to invalid inferences such as the existence of psychological constructs based on factor models\, or recommendations for clinical interventions based on network models. I my talk\, demonstrate this inferential gap in a simulation: excellent model fit does little to corroborate a theory\, regardless of quality or quantity of data. Second\, researchers fail to explicate theories about psychological constructs\, but use implicit causal beliefs to guide inferences. These latent theories have led to problematic best practices. Third\, explicated theories are often weak theories: imprecise descriptions vulnerable to hidden assumptions and unknowns. Such theories do not offer precise predictions\, and it is often unclear whether statistical effects actually corroborate weak theories or not. I demonstrate that these three challenges are common and harmful\, and impede theory formation\, failure\, and reform. Matching theoretical and statistical models is necessary to bring data to bear on theories\, and a renewed focus on theoretical psychology and formalizing theories offers a way forward.

SUMMARY:Séminaire – Marcello GALLUCCI
DESCRIPTION:The Cronbach variations : Multi-items measurements and modern statistical techniques to analyze them\nStarting from classical measurement theory and Cronbach’s Generalizability theory\, standard techniques to evaluate measurements composed by multi-items or multi-stimuli are reviewed\, and some practical guidelines are presented. On this basis\, more advanced techniques are introduced for the analysis of experiments and designs that include multi-items or multi-stimuli measurements\, such as multi-items scales or highly repeated-measures designs. Particular emphasis will be given to mixed models (multilevel models) applied to the analysis of these designs\, in which both items and participants are considered as a source of variability. Practical examples will be discussed with the aid of jamovi statistical software.

SUMMARY:Séminaire – Lisa DEBRUINE
DESCRIPTION:Replication and Generalisation: Crowdsourcing Better Research\nThe “replication crisis” has led to a call for initiatives to increase the replicability of psychological science\, such as data and code sharing\, pre-registration\, registered reports\, and reproducible workflows. Similarly\, researchers have questioned the extent to which studies of WEIRD populations (Western\, Educated\, Industrialised\, Rich\, and Democratic) generalise to the majority of people in the rest of the world. I will discuss the role of large-scale crowdsourced projects for addressing both replication and generalisation\, with a focus on the Psychological Science Accelerator’s first project. The Psychological Science Accelerator is a globally distributed network of  more than 360 laboratories\, representing 45 countries on all six populated continents\, that coordinates data collection for democratically selected studies. \nLisa DEBRUINE (University of Glasgow)

SUMMARY:Séminaire – Christian UNKELBACH
DESCRIPTION:Why people may believe false information despite knowing betterThe modern world experiences strategic misinformation\, fake news\, and the apparent loss of belief in traditionally credible sources such as universities. Thus\, the question of how and why people believe information to be true is a prominent research topic. I will approach this question from a Brunswikian perspective: Truth is a distal concept that cannot be assessed directly. Instead\, people must use cues that may be indicative of information’s factual truth status. I will distinguish between two broad classes of cues\, namely informational cues (e.g.\, knowledge sources\, advice) and experiential cues (e.g.\, familiarity\, fluency). The former cues may be misleading; that is\, a source may be faulty or advice may be wrong. The latter cues are a priori true; if information feels familiar or is processed fluently\, the experience has an inherent truth value. With this assumption\, one may explain and predict when and why people believe false information despite knowing better. I will present several experiments that pit these two classes of cues against each other and show that they jointly inform judgments of truth. However\, if the cues contradict each other\, people still use the experiential cue\, even for highly relevant topics and with tangible costs for themselves in an incentivized paradigm. The present framework thereby provides a basis for explaining false beliefs and suggest novel paths for debunking false information Christian UNKELBACH (University of Cologne)

SUMMARY:Séminaire – Kyle RATNER
DESCRIPTION:Visualizing “Us” and “Them”\nMost social psychology research on face processing focuses on direct visual perception. However\, people regularly form mental representations of faces when the people they are thinking about are not in front of them. Research from my lab suggests that merely sharing a novel group membership with another person can bias how one represents that person’s face. In the current talk\, I will present new evidence that one way people represent ingroup and outgroup faces is by imbuing arbitrary group distinctions with meaning. Specifically\, we find that people who are separated into minimal groups using a classic overestimator/underestimator paradigm form different representations of overestimator and underestimator faces. Ingroup and outgroup representational differences are then scaffolded onto the overestimator and underestimator differences. This work provides new insight into the minimal group paradigm and how people think about faces of group members. It also adds to a growing literature on how social factors influence mental representations of faces. \nKyle RATNER de l’Université de Californie à Santa Barbara

SUMMARY:Séminaire – Marcel ZEELENBERG
DESCRIPTION:Regret in Decision Making\nRegret is the prototypical decision related emotion. It is felt when the outcome of a non-chosen alternative is better than the outcomes obtained. Regret a functional emotion that helps people to correct mistakes. It is also functional because people can anticipate regret beforehand and then choose in such a way to avoid regret from happening. Researchers in economics proposed regret theory\, an alternative to rational choice theory that takes into account the anticipation of regret and its influence in choice. Researchers in psychology in studied how anticipations of regret influence decision making in a variety of domains\, amongst which the health domain. The findings suggest that interventions can be developed that are based on the idea that people are regret averse. I will provide an overview of research on regret and how it may impact choice.
