Le rôle potentiel de mécanismes psychologiques dans cette affection post-COVID-19\, souvent qualifiée de “COVID long”\, est évoqué depuis les premiers mois de la pandémie. Les données probantes étayant cette hypothèse s’accumulent désormais. Premièrement\, un antécédent de symptômes anxieux ou dépressifs constitue un facteur de risque d’affection post-COVID-19 avec une relation dose-réponse et une taille d’effet similaire à celles observées pour d’autres facteurs de risque. Cette association s’étend à d’autres formes de détresse psychologique\, notamment stress perçu et sentiment de solitude. Deuxièmement\, des croyances spécifiques concernant la COVID-19 ont été associées au risque de survenue ultérieure de symptômes similaires\, quelques semaines à plusieurs mois plus tard. D’autres études\, non encore répliquées\, suggèrent une influence du contexte de la première infection (première versus seconde vague de la pandémie\, avant l’émergence des principaux variants et de la vaccination) et de la confiance dans diverses sources d’informations sur la COVID-19 sur le risque de symptômes ultérieurs. Les modèles bayésiens de la perception rendent particulièrement bien compte de ces résultats dans un cadre théorique similaire à celui avancé pour les troubles somatiques fonctionnels\, intégrant une anticipation accrue des symptômes\, des capacités à percevoir l’état physiologique du corps (intéroception) diminuées et une intolérance à l’incertitude dans le contexte de symptômes initialement déclenchés par un épisode infectieux. Ces mécanismes psychologiques ne doivent évidemment pas être considérés comme exclusifs. Mais étant modifiables\, ils pourraient être ciblés dans des essais cliniques\, au sein d’une prise en charge intégrative et multidisciplinaire. In tradition dual-process models\, emotional and maladaptive behavior is typically explained by stimulus-driven processes and adaptive behavior by goal-directed processes. This model\, moreover\, holds a default-interventionist architecture in which stimulus-driven processes are the default determinant of behavior and goal-directed processes can occasionally intervene (provided that there is sufficient opportunity\, capacity\, and motivation). In recent years\, I proposed an alternative dual-process model with a parallel-competitive architecture in which stimulus-driven and goal-directed processes operate in parallel\, but the goal-directed process often wins the competition and therefore counts as the main determinant of behavior\, including maladaptive behavior. This model explains seemingly maladaptive behavior as the result of a goal-directed process at the service of hidden goals and truly maladaptive behavior as the result of errors or problems in the goal-directed process. While empirical evidence for the traditional model has recently come under pressure\, evidence for the alternative model is growing. This research has contributed to the development of new measurement methods\, research paradigms\, and inspiring theories. The importance of these contributions should not be underestimated. Yet\, we argue that this research builds on divergent and problematic conceptualizations of the implicitness construct. We identify and discuss issues associated with three of these definitions: a first\, procedural (implicit=indirect) definition\, has little theoretical interest; a second\, functional (implicit=automatic) definition\, conflates automaticity features\, fails to constrain the set of “implicit measures”\, and raises construct validity issues; a third\, mental theory (implicit=associative) definition\, is at odds with empirical evidence. Important questions are: What is the brain basis of the sign production? How are the signs interpreted? Which of these signs are produced in emotion induction of fear and sadness and which psychophysiological reactions co-occur there? I will answer these questions partly in this talk mainly with a reference to emotion theories\, especially basic emotion theory (e.g. Ekman\, 1992). First\, I will show by fMRI-data that the production of AUs are organized in the primary motor area of the frontal cortex in a quasi-somatotopic order. Second\, I will show data on the interpretation of AU-combinations which are seen as fear expressions in EMFACS (Friesen & Ekman\, 1983). Interestingly many of these AU-combinations are interpreted as disgust or sadness. This questions usual assumptions of Ekman’s basic emotion theory (Ekman\, 1992). Third\, in another study I question Ekman’s basic emotion theory\, especially its universality assumption of facial emotion expressions. We compared German participants with an indigenous group in Uganda\, the Karamoja. The Karamoja showed strongly reduced recognition rates of the picture stimuli. Several universality criteria were tested\, but in most emotions and most criteria\, they were not fulfilled. Fourth\, I show results of an emotion induction study\, where fear and sadness were induced by film parts. Facial expressions had practically no coherence with self-reports of fear and sadness. Psychophysiological data (EDA\, IBI\, finger temperature\, neck EMG\, breathing) are also reported as well as their coherence with self-report of fear and sadness. Fifth\, I will present data on the emotion expression of elite high jumpers after clearing or missing their maximal height. We could demonstrate that triumph as first established by Hwang & Matsumoto (2012)\, is not only an emotion category\, which is recognized\, but also which happens in meaningful situations\, also in sport types with no direct fight between competitors. Deux études indiquent que ces effets de compatibilité AE peuvent être observés suite à l’exposition à des stimuli affectifs dégradés présentés auditivement et a priori sans pertinence pour les comportements mesurés. De plus\, les résultats suggèrent que le lien entre la perception des stimuli et l’AE n’est pas direct\, mais que l’information affective serait utilisée pour répondre aux exigences de la tâche. Plus précisément\, pour rendre compte de ces résultats\, nous avons proposé que la dimension évaluative des stimuli est utilisée pour répondre à la question que les individus ont en tête lorsqu’ils réalisent la tâche. Deux autres études testaient plus directement cette hypothèse et en exploraient les limites. Dans celle-ci\, l’objet de l’information affective était manipulé via les consignes (« demandez-vous si vous devez approcher » vs. « demandez-vous si vous devez éviter ») et les stimuli affectifs étaient présentés à la fois visuellement et de manière clairement visible. Dans la première étude\, les stimuli affectifs précédaient la présentation des cibles alors que dans la seconde l’activation de la dimension affective survenait au même moment que la présentation de la cible. Furthermore\, scholars studying inequality or social class often assume that education is merely one indicator of socioeconomic status and is to a large extent interchangeable with other indicators such as income. However\, two reasons why education is very different from income are that (1) education and not income drives current political polarization and (2) people make more internal attributions for education than for income. I therefore argue that education is an independent source of identity and intergroup processes\, and give an overview of research into education-based groups. Evidence strongly suggests that social connection qualifies as a protective factor for chronic disease and premature mortality. This talk will summarize this evidence\, providing the scope of the health effects\, potential mechanisms\, and risk factors\, as well as gaps in this evidence. This suggests that people are either entirely unaware of their “unconscious” attitudes\, or unwilling to reveal them honestly. I will present a series of projects that questions the utility and veracity of both of those explanations and show that under many circumstances people are both willing and able to report on the evaluations reflected in implicit measures. Instead\, I will present a model that can explain divergences between implicit bias and explicit attitudes in terms of other psychological (attention\, failures in affective forecasting) and methodological (stimulus effects\, calibration) factors. These findings have implications for cognitive and applied social psychology. Theoretically\, they can lead to a better understanding of automaticity and consciousness in social cognition\, suggesting a distinction between three types of conscious awareness of one’s own cognitions. From an applied perspective\, a better understanding of the underlying cognitions can lead applied researchers to design more effective interventions targeted at acknowledgement of racial biases. In contrast\, I present a framework that explains the formation of these and other typical attitude biases as rather innocent byproducts of cognitive principles of information processing. Accordingly\, attitude formation is guided by differentiation\, meaning that it primarily relies on distinct attributes that differentiate a given attitude object from already known ones. Distinct attributes however\, are usually negative. Because negative attributes are rare and highly diverse\, they are overrepresented among distinct attributes. Consequently\, attitudes about “novel” persons and groups such as strangers\, refugees\, minorities\, or out-groups can be expected to be negatively biased. In addition\, assuming that stereotypes describe attributes that differentiate a given group from other groups\, most stereotypes can be expected to be negative. Finally\, the present framework also predicts typical self-superiority effects and a general negative attitude towards change (“status-quo-bias”). In sum\, the present work suggests that differentiation – an innocent principle of information processing – often results in the formation of negatively biased attitudes\, because what differentiates a person or group from the population background is usually negative. Most work reads like an exercise in model fitting\, and falls short of theory building and testing in three ways. First\, statistical and theoretical models are conflated\, leading to invalid inferences such as the existence of psychological constructs based on factor models\, or recommendations for clinical interventions based on network models. I my talk\, demonstrate this inferential gap in a simulation: excellent model fit does little to corroborate a theory\, regardless of quality or quantity of data. Second\, researchers fail to explicate theories about psychological constructs\, but use implicit causal beliefs to guide inferences. These latent theories have led to problematic best practices. Third\, explicated theories are often weak theories: imprecise descriptions vulnerable to hidden assumptions and unknowns. Such theories do not offer precise predictions\, and it is often unclear whether statistical effects actually corroborate weak theories or not. I demonstrate that these three challenges are common and harmful\, and impede theory formation\, failure\, and reform. Matching theoretical and statistical models is necessary to bring data to bear on theories\, and a renewed focus on theoretical psychology and formalizing theories offers a way forward.
